If you are new to crocheting, then check out my Beginner Crochet Series. I also have two other crocheted headband patterns you may want to check out. The “Easy Crocheted Headband” is made using the same knotted technique, and the “Easiest Crocheted Headband Ever” is made using a simple gathering stitch.

Supply List

• Number 4, medium-weight yarn (approximately 60-70 yards)
  • I used Bernat Premium yarn (acrylic) in Caramel.
• 4mm (G-6) to 5mm (H-8) crochet hook
• Darning needle
• Stitch markers (optional)
• Scissors
• Cloth tape measure
• Hand-steamer (optional)

People often about making these projects to fit different size people. I always custom-fit, but here is a chart that can help you figure out sizing. I do find these sizes generous because crochetwork tends to have a fair bit of flexibility in it, but it can be used as a guideline for this Crocheted Headband with a Twist.

You will need to do a bit of math to calculate the length of the foundation chain. For some reason, this stitch (the small daisy stitch) compresses in length…quite substantially. I have always used the foundation chain to measure the fit. My head circumference is 20.5″, but the foundation chain with a comfortable fit is 19″. This is because the chain has some flexibility in it.

When I made the foundation chain 19″ in length (which again, was the comfortable size for the chain around my head) and crocheted the first row of this stitch pattern, the length shrunk to 16″! So, after much trial and error, I found a calculation that worked. Use the fitted length of the foundation chain and multiply that by 1.25. So in my case, that was 19″ x 1.25 = 24.75″ for the foundation chain.

Once I crocheted the first row, it finished at 19.5″. It did finish a little bit larger (by 1/2″), so if you have to add a stitch or subtract a stitch to get your odd number count on the foundation chain, I would suggest subtracting a stitch. I know this is a bit fussy, but this stitch pattern is so pretty and worth the effort! The finished size of the fabric is 19.5″ by 4.75″.

The Pattern

Note: This stitch pattern seems complicated, but it is very easy, once you know the pattern. There are several steps for each stitch, so I am not providing photos for this pattern. You can check out the video tutorial to see how this pattern works up.

Make a foundation chain to fit with an odd number of stitches. For this project, I am making a ladies’ small, which measures 24.75″ in length (after special math), and based on my yarn choice, hook size, and tension, the foundation chain worked out to 77 chains.

Row one: working into the back bump of the chain for the entire row, sk st, yo, pull through the 2nd ch from the hook (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through next st, (3 loops on hook), sk st, yo, pull through next st (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through all four loops, ch 1 (beginning cluster made).

*Yo, pull through the leg of ch1, (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through the base stitch of the cluster (3 loops on hook), sk st, yo, pull through next st (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through all four loops, ch 1. Repeat from * to the end of the row. There will be 2 ch’s left, complete the cluster as directed except the ch 1 stitch. Turn your work.

Row two: ch 3, yo, pull through one loop of 2nd ch from the hook, (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through a loop of the next ch st (3 loops on hook), sk st, yo, pull through sk’d sp from previous row (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through all four loops, ch 1 (beginning cluster made).

*Yo, pull through the leg of ch1, (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through the base stitch of the cluster (3 loops on hook), sk st, yo, pull through next st (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through all four loops, ch 1. Repeat from * to the end of the row. There will be 2 ch’s left, complete the cluster as directed except the ch 1 stitch. Turn your work.

Rows three to seven: repeat row two

Last row: finish row two repeat, ch 1 for the last cluster and ch 1 to fasten off. Leave a 12″ tail to sew the band together. Darn in the beginning tail end. You can make the band any depth you like, but this knot pattern works best with a slightly deeper fabric. My panel finished at 19.5″ by 4.75″.

To create the know for this Crocheted Headband with a Twist, bring the short ends of the band together and tuck them inside each other halfway. You will have 1/3 gap on each side and 1/3 with four layers of fabric. If you are using a different stitch pattern, you want to have the fabric with the right sides facing together. This daisy stitch pattern is reversible, so either side is fine.

Using the long tail end, sew the four layers of fabric together using a whip stitch (or any stitch you like). Do a double stitch for the last stitch and turn the headband 180 degrees (see below).

The two open spaces will fold naturally together. Line them up, and using the same strand of yarn, sew the two ends together using the same stitch. Finish with a knot and darn in the tail end. Flip the band right side out and you are done!!! How pretty!

There is no supply list for this pattern because you can use any yarn you like, just make sure to use the recommended size crochet hook for that yarn. I am using the Bernat Premium yarn in Candy Pink. It is a number four medium-weight acrylic yarn. I choose a 4.5 mm (7 US) size hook for the project.

Begin by creating a foundation chain that fits comfortably around your head (or for who you are making it for). It should not be too loose or too tight, you want the ‘goldie locks’ fit. The chain should be an odd number of stitches, so for me, I made my foundation chain 65 stitches which is 19″ (48 cm) in length.

The Pattern for the Easiest Crocheted Headband Ever!

Ch 65 (or an odd number of chains for your desired size), ch 1 for a turning ch.

Note: the foundation chain should be crocheted with a tension that is loose. If you are not proficient with your crochet tension, you can use a crochet hook that is half a size bigger for the foundation chain. Once the chain has been completed, you can return to the regular-size hook.

Row one: 1 sc in the back bump of 1st ch (not the turning ch), 1 sc in the back bump of each ch to the end of row (65 sc’s or equal to beg ch, not including turning ch.)

Row two: ch 1, turn your work, 1 sc in the first st (going under both loops), *sk 1 st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * to the end of the row (finishing with 2 sc in the last st).

Row 3 and onward: repeat row 2, noting that every row will begin with 1 sc in the 1st st and finish with 2 sc in the last st.

Crochet as many rows of the row two repeat as you like, until the headband is the desired depth. Fasten off and leave a long tail (about 12″ or 30 cm) to use as a gathering stitch. Darn in the beginning tail end.

I crocheted a total of 13 rows of the pattern repeat, so including the first row of single crochet, my headband finished with 14 rows. The final measurement of the panel is 19.25 inches by 4.25 inches (48 cm by 11 cm). This is a good size for an average woman or adult teen.

You can block the rectangle fabric at this point using either a hand steamer or a regular blocking technique for crochet. Here is a tutorial from a different crochet channel that is very informative. There will be no “right side” to this fabric, both sides will be the same.

Using the long tail and darning needle for a gathering stitch, sew the short ends of the headband together using a basic back-and-forth stitch. See the video tutorial for more details.

Pull gently on the gathering stitch to gather the seam together. Make it as snug as possible.

Then bring the needle back down through the gathered section and pull the yarn gently in the other direction. You want the make the gathered section as tight as possible without breaking the yarn. Sew a couple of stitches on this end, tie a knot, and darn in the tail end to the inside of the headband. Then you are done! I hope you enjoyed this pattern for the Easiest Crocheted Headband Ever!

Speaking of lighter color yarn…I started creating the beanie pattern using the Bernat Wavelength yarn in the color Opal as shown in the multicolor beanie above. This is the same brand yarn I used for the leg warmers but in a lighter color. Well, the light color was even harder to see than the dark color used for the leg warmers!

So, I decided to do the pattern using the Bernat Premium yarn in a simple grey color. However, the Premium yarn is a number four medium weight yarn, while the Wavelength is a number five chunky yarn. As a result, the pattern is different for each weight yarn. I will write the pattern for the Premium yarn in the number four weight to go with the pictures, and then I will have the adjustments required to use the Wavelength Chunky yarn at the bottom of the post.

This pattern comes in two sizes, youth, and adult. I note where to make the adjustments for both weights of yarn. The Supplies you will need are:

• Any numuber 4 medium weight yarn approximately 110-130 yds (100-115 m). The yarn I am using is:

• sl st = slip stitch

Special instructions:

With the exception of the brim, all the double crochets for this pattern are worked into the top loop and back bump of each stitch. I show this better in the video, and you can check that out if you like. The reason for this is to create a nice texture for the beanie design while also ensuring that two stitches (loops) are crocheted into so the hat is strong and doesn’t have the gaps that can occur if crocheting into one stitch (loop) only. Each round will begin with a chain two, which will not count as a double crochet.

Sizes

• Adult:
  • Crown to bottom of brim: 8″ (20 cm)
  • Circumference: 22″ (56 cm)
• Youth
  • Crown to bottom of brim: 7.5″ (19 cm)
  • Circumerence: 21″ (53.5 cm)

The Pattern:

Round one: Using the J-10 (6 mm) crochet hook, create a magic ring or ch 5 and sl st into the 1st ch to create a ring. Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a dc here or through the whole pattern), 12 dc into the ring, sk ch2, sl st into the top loop, and back bump of beg dc to join round (and continue to crochet into the top loop and back bump for every st).

Round two: ch 2, 1 dc back into the same st, 2 dc into next st, twice, *1 dc in next st, 2 dc into next st, twice. Repeat from * two more times (20 dc), sk ch2, sl st into the top of beg dc to join round.

Round three: ch 2, 1 dc back into the same st, 2 dc in the next st, *1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st. Repeat from * 8 times (30 dc), sk ch2, sl st into the top of beg dc to join round.

Round four: ch 2, 1 dc back into the same st, 1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, *1 dc in the next st, twice, 2 dc in the next st. Repeat from * 8 times (40 dc), sk ch2, sl st into the top of beg dc to join round.

Round five: ch 2, 1 dc back into the same st, 1 dc in the next st, twice, 2 dc in the next st, *1 dc in the next st, three times, 2 dc in the next st. Repeat from * 8 times (50 dc), sk ch2, sl st into the top of beg dc to join round.

Note: for youth size, stop increasing after round five and skip to round seven.

Round six: ch 2, 1 dc back into the same st, 1 dc in the next st, three times, 2 dc in the next st, *1 dc in the next st, four times, 2 dc in the next st. Repeat from * 8 times (60 dc), sk ch2, sl st into the top of beg dc to join round.

Round seven: ch 2, 1 dc into the same st, 1 dc in each st all the way around (60 dc for adult size and 50 dc for youth size)

Rounds eight to thirteen: repeat round seven.

Note: For youth size repeat round seven for a total of eleven to twelve rounds depending on the size desired.

Brim:

Row one: Using the H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, Ch 4, 1 sc in the top loop of the first ch from hook, 1 sc in the top loop of the next two ch’s (3 sc). Sl st into the top loop and back bump of the first dc, sl st into the top loop, and back bump of the next dc (always sl st into the top loop and back bump of each dc st).

Row two: turn your work, 1 sc into the top loop only of each sc (3 sc), ch 1.

Row three: turn your work, 1 sc the top loop of each sc (3 sc), sl st into the next dc, twice.

Repeat rows two and three until you have crocheted all the way around the beanie.

Fasten off and sew the brim seam together. Darn in your tail ends, and if you used a magic ring to begin, tie a knot or do a few small stitches into the beanie before darning in the tail end. I’ve found that magic rings have a tendency to come undone unless they are secured in some way.

And the Super Easy Crocheted Beanie is done! Now if you want to use the heavier weight yarn, follow the directions below.

Supplies for chucky weight beanie

• Any numuber 5 chunky weight yarn approximately 100-110 yds (95-100 m). The yarn I am using is:
  • Bernat Wavelength Yarn Opal Acrylic yarn, 223 yds (204 m) {enough to make 2 hats}
  • H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook
  • J-10 (6 mm) crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors

For the adult size, follow directions for rounds one to five, skip round six (stop increasing) and go to round seven. Repeat round seven to a total of eleven rounds. Crochet brim as directed above.

For the youth size, follow the directions for rounds one to five, skip round six (stop increasing), and go to round seven. Repeat round seven for a total of ten rounds. Crochet brim as directed above.

This easy crocheted headband can be made to fit any size head. You will just make the foundation chain long enough to fit whoever you are making it for, and the height (or depth) of the band can be any size you like! This is a simple two-row repeat using single crochets.

You can use up partial balls of yarn for the headband because it doesn’t require a lot of yarn. And because this pattern is made to fit any size head, you can use any size or weight of yarn you like. I am using a number 4 medium-weight yarn (also called worsted) from a previous project I made (the Lavender Fields Pocket Shawl).

I have created basic written directions for the band below, but I also have a video tutorial that shows how to sew the band in such a way to create a pretty twisted design. If you are new to crochet, then you can check out my Beginner Crochet Series to learn all the basics!

You will start with a foundation chain that fits comfortably around your head. Mine was 19″ (47.5 cm) in length with 65 chains. Then you add one extra chain for the turning chain (66 chains).

Pattern:

Foundation chain of the desired length, plus one chain

Row one: 1 sc in the back bump of each chain stitch (65 sc), ch 1 turn (you can double check the fit at this point, you may have to unravel to add or subtract a few chain stitches).

Row two: 1 sc in the back loop (top stitch) of each stitch (65 sc), ch 1, turn.

Row three: 1 sc in the front loop (bottom stitch) of each stitch (65 sc), ch 1, turn.

Row four onward: Repeat rows two and three until the band is the desired depth. Finish the last row with the row two repeat. Mine was 14 rows in total with a finished depth of 4.5″ (11.5 cm). Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos at this point, but this is where you can go to the video tutorial to see how to sew the band together. This part of the tutorial begins at 9:45 in the video.

The wonderful thing about this tutorial on how to crochet a hat for men, is that you can use any yarn you like! I will show you how you can make this hat to fit any size head, so the pattern is quite suited for any yarn, any hook size or any person.

The scarf tutorial is suited for beginners (with a bit of experience), but the hat pattern does require a bit more crochet knowledge. If you are new to crochet (and I do have a Beginner Crochet Series), I do recommend that you start with the scarf tutorial before taking on this hat project. It would be helpful to be proficient with the crochet stitch used to create this design.

I used the remaining ball of yarn, combined with the accent yarn used from the scarf tutorial. In total, you will need between 180 and 200 yards of yarn (165 to 180 meters), to crochet this hat for men. In the scarf tutorial, I give you the option to crochet an accent border around the scarf, or leave it as is. If you choose not to add this border to the scarf, then two full balls of the Lion Brand Ferris Wheel yarn would be just enough to make both the hat and scarf. But I think the accent yarn adds a nice touch!

The supplies you will need for this project are:

• 180 to 200 yards (165 to 180 meters) number 4 medium weight yarn
  • I used Lion Brand Ferris Wheel in Morning Java – 2 balls
  • and Bernat Premium Yarn in Dark Grey Heather – partial ball (this yarn is hard to find online, I found mine at Walmart Canada and Michael’s Canada)
• 5 mm (H-8 US) crochet hook
• 4.5 mm (7 US) crochet hook (optional)
• Stitch markers
• Darning needle
• Scissors

You can see in the image above how I am using two different yarns to create the hat pattern. The brim is made with the complementary yarn by Bernat, and the body of the hat is made with the self-striping yarn by Lion Brand. This crocheted fall hat is also very easy to adjust for different sizes, you just make the brim so that it fits around the circumference of your head (or whoever you are making it for), and work from there. My brim was 18.5 inches long, but yours might be 18 or 19 inches long.

The yarn I am using is the Red Heart Comfort in Argyle Print, which is a variegated yarn with all these warm, fall colors blended in. It is a number four, medium weight, acrylic yarn. I found this large ball of yarn (649 yards of 593 meters) at Michael’s Canada, but I haven’t been able to find the same yarn online. I did find a very similar style in the Red Heart line (but it doesn’t have the blue and is a smaller ball). I will put a link to that below in the supply list.

The supplies you will need for this project are:

• Number 4 medium weight yarn (less than 200 yards or 185 meters)
• Crochet hook 5.5 mm or I-9 (or the size recommended by your yarn choice)
• Scissors

As I mentioned above, I created this Crocheted Fall Hat to match the Easy Fall Scarf in my previous post. I didn’t use the arch stitch as I did in the fall scarf pattern because the gaps were too large and wouldn’t make for a very warm hat.

Instead, I used a very simple series of single crochets, half double crochets, and double crochets to create a ribbed design in the fabric. The result is a very cozy and very warm hat! Because the stitches are so basic, this crocheted fall hat is suited for beginners. If you are new to crochet, however, I do recommend starting with my Beginner Crochet Series to learn all the basics.

You will need just six granny squares as shown below, which are the same size and colors as the granny squares from the poncho pattern. So rather than repeating all those directions, just pop over to Part One of the poncho pattern to get all the information and directions you need.

The size of squares required for this project are the same as for the poncho. The infant size is for 6 to 12 months, the medium fits 12 to 18 months, and the large fits 18 to 24 months.

• Infant = 2.5″ (6.25 to 6.5cm) with an E-4 (3.5mm) crochet hook
• Medium Toddler = 2.75″ (7cm) with a G-6 (4mm) crochet hook
• Large Toddler = 3″ (7.5cm) with a 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook

The length of the band for each size should be:

• Infant = 15″ (38 cm)
• Medium Toddler = 16″ (40.5 cm)
• Large Toddler = 17″ (43.25 cm)

Sew all the granny squares together in a row using the invisible whip stitch (shown in Part One of the poncho pattern), and then join them together to create a band. The length of the band for each size is listed above. If after sewing the six squares together, the band is not the correct length (chances are it might be a bit short), you can add a row or two of single crochet on the end to get the length you need.

Bottom Band: Join the same yarn color used for the trim of the poncho pattern (or color of choice) in any chain one space. I’m using Aqua.

Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), 1 dc in each stitch all the way around the band. This will include 1 dc in each ch2 sp and 1 dc in the joining seam for a total of 60 dc including beg ch3.

Join with a slip stitch in the 3rd ch of the beg ch3. Fasten off.

Now to create the crown, start Row one by crocheting another row of dc on the other side of the band, just like the bottom band, but don’t fasten off.

Row two: Ch 3 (counts as your first dc), 1 dc in next stitch. *1 dc2tog (double crochet 2 stitches together…see below) in the next 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from * 16 times.

Double crochet 2 stitches together ~ dc2tog: Begin 1 dc in next stitch, but only complete half the stitch by pulling through 2 loops, leaving 2 loops on your hook (a). Begin 1 dc in the next stitch, but only complete half the stitch by pulling through 2 loops, leaving 3 loops on your hook (b). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops (c).

After the 16th repeat of the pattern, you will have 4 stitches left (e). Do 1 dc in the next stitch, 1 dc2tog in the next 2 stitches, and 1 dc in the last stitch. Join with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the beg ch3.

Row three: Ch 3 (counts as your first dc), 1 dc in next stitch. *1 dc2tog in the next 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from * 11 times. Join with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the beg ch3.

Row four: Ch 3 (counts as your first dc), 1 dc in next stitch. *1 dc2tog in the next 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from * 7 times. Join with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the beg ch3.

Row 5: Ch 1 (you can mark this with a stitch marker, but it is quite obvious where the row begins), 1 sc in each stitch all the way around (18 sc including beg ch1). You will now be crocheting in a spiral pattern, but will begin to decrease at this point. As you begin this next round, skip one stitch, 1 sc in the next stitch. Repeat this all the way around until the crown of the hat is closed.

Finish with the last sc in the opposite stitch to close the crown completely. Cut your yarn and pull it off the hook as if fastening off.

Bring the crochet hook through from the inside of the hat and pull the tail end of the yarn to the inside of the hat. Darn in all your tail ends and you are done!

The hat pattern is a very basic pattern and super easy to make, so it is suited for beginners. I used all the same colors from the scarf, and just did rows of 3 double crochet clusters. If you wanted, you could put a pom-pom on this hat. I have a tutorial for that if you like.

As always, I have also created a video tutorial for this project, and you can find that at the bottom of this post. The yarns I am using for this project are the same as what I used for the Ferris Wheel Scarf pattern. For that, I used an assortment of acrylic yarns that I had in my stash. Some came from the thrift store and others were from previous projects.

I could only find links for the green yarn which is Cascade Yarns-Anthem-44. I will write the colors that I used in the supply list below, but I’ll put links to similar colors in the Anthem line (which is lovely yarn!) For my Canadian friends, it may be hard to have this yard shipped to Canada, but Yarn Canada has a great selection in the Patons line.

The supplies you will need for this project are:

• Number 4 medium weight yarn in at least two different colors:
  • Patons Canadiana-Medium Teal (Cascade Yarns-Anthem-30)
  • Patons Canadiana-Fool’s Gold (Cascade Yarns-Anthem-20)
  • Bernat Satin-Star Dust (Cascade Yarns-Anthem-55)
  • Bernat Satin-Maitai (Cascade Yarns-Anthem-09)
  • Cascade Yarns-Anthem-44
  • Cascade Yarns-Pacific-43 (Cascade Yarns-Anthem-50)
  • 4mm (G-6) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle

I used the Berroco Vintage DK in color number 2170 for the brim and crown of the hat, which is the yarn I used for the trim around the scarf (it’s not shown above, but you can see it in the brim of the hat). It is actually a number 3 weight yarn and that worked well for the scarf, but I wanted the brim to be more sturdy, so I doubled up on this yarn for the brim. You can use any number 4 medium-weight yarn for the brim, or if you want to use the Berroco yarn, you’ll want to use 2 strands as well.

There are several online yarn shops that carry this yarn including Yarnatopia. I love the look of the denim color, but you could use any neutral color such as tan, grey, or black.

The stitches required for the hat are very basic. We will be using a slip knot, a slip stitch (sl st), a chain stitch (ch), a single crochet (sc), and a double crochet (dc). If you are new to crochet, you can check out my Beginner’s Crochet Series here.

For the brim, I am using a number 4 medium weight acrylic yarn in images ‘a to d’ because it was a little easier to demonstrate with. I carry on with the Berroco Vintage yarn from image ‘e’.

Begin with a ch 8.

Row one: 1 sc in the top post of the first stitch from hook [a]. 1 sc in the top post of the next 6 stitches [b]. Ch 1, turn your work.

Row Two: 1 sc in the top post of the first stitch (not the ch1) [c], 1 sc in the top post of the next 5 sts, 1 sc in both posts of the last st [d], ch 1, turn your work.

Rows Three and onward: Repeat row two until the brim is long enough to fit around your head. Your total number of rows needs to be divisible by 3. My brim was 18.5 inches (47 cm) with 69 rows in total.

Join the short ends of the brim with a sl st into each adjacent stitch. Put your crochet hook through the first stitch, picking up the post closest to you (not the turning ch1) [e]. Then pick up one post on the adjacent side (again, the one closest to you). Continue to sl st the short ends together [f], making sure to pick up the very last stitch of the row [g].

Now you are at the top of the brim and are going to do a row of single crochets around the brim to create a nice row to work into with the 3dc clusters.

Single crochet around brim: Ch 1, 1 sc in top of the first row [h], 1 sc in top of each row [i] all the way around the brim, sl st into beg ch1 to join and ch 1 to fasten off.

This can be a bit tricky because there isn’t actually a stitch to crochet into, so you need to find 2 ‘posts’ at the end of each row, just do your best. You should have the same amount of single crochets as you have rows, so for my brim, I had 69 sc, including the first ch1.

Row One: Join on a new color using a slip knot and slip stitch (see instructions for the Ferris Wheel Granny Square on how to do this…4th image from the top of the post) in the first sc past where you fastened off, going under 2 posts. Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc), 2 dc in same sc, skip 2 stitches. *3 dc in 3rd stitch, skip 2 stitches, repeat from * all the way around. Join round with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3, ch 1 to fasten off.

Row Two: Join with a new color into a space between the 3dc clusters. Ch 3 (counts as your first dc), 2 dc in same space, *3 dc in next space between clusters. Repeat from * all the way around and join with a sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3. Ch 1 to fasten off.

Rows Three to Ten: Repeat row two.

Row Eleven: Do not fasten off. Join row ten with a sl st. Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, *3 dc in next space, repeat from * all the way around and join with a sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3. Ch 1 to fasten off (don’t cut tail yet).

I made this hat with 11 rows of 3dc clusters, with the last two rows using the same color as the brim. The finished height was 7.5 inches or 19 cm. This size fits my head nice and snug, sort of like a beanie. You could make the hat bigger by adding more rows of 3dc clusters to make it more loose-fitting, or even like a slouchy hat. It’s totally up to you!

To close up the crown of the hat, cut a tail about 24 inches or 61 cm in length [m]. Thread the yarn onto a darning needle and start sewing a basting stitch under both posts of every second stitch of your last row [n]. Work in the same direction, putting the needle under the two posts of every second stitch all the way around the top [o].

Once you’ve reached the other side with the basting stitch, gently pull the yarn to gather the crown together. This may be a bit bulky, but just continue to gently gather until you have it as tight as possible (be careful not to pull the gathering yarn too tight or the yarn might break). Stitch the crown closed with a few stitches, and bring the yarn down into the inside of the hat and tie a knot. Cut about a 2-inch tail and darn that in. Darn in all your tail ends and you are done!!!

I LOVE this yarn! It is made by Lion Brand and the color is Vintage Carousel. They have several other colors, but this is my favorite. The yarn is a #4 medium weight acrylic yarn, and I’m so impressed with the yarn that I did a review on it. I bought mine at Michaels and it is also available through Lion Brand directly, as well as through Amazon.

The supplies you will need for this pattern are:

• 1 ball of Lion Brand Ferris Wheel yarn in Vintage Carousel (or equivalent choice)
• 4mm (G-6) crochet hook
• Scissors
• Darning Needle
• 1 stitch marker (optional)

Row 1: Ch 45 or make the chain 12″ (30cm) long. Make the chain stitches quite loose for this row. If you tend to have tight tension, just use a slightly larger crochet hook for this row. Count your stitches.

Row 2: Ch1, 1sc in back post of 2nd stitch from hook. *1sc in back post of next stitch. Repeat from * to end of the row, ch1 and turn.

Row 3: 1sc in the back post of the first stitch (not the turning chain). *1sc in the back post of the next stitch. Repeat from * to second last stitch of the row. 1sc in both posts of last stitch, ch1, turn your work. This side will be the hat brim (which is why you do the sc in both posts at the end of this row).

Row 4: 1sc in both posts of the first stitch. *1sc in both posts of next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the row, ch1, turn your work. (count your stitches every now and then to make sure you are staying on track)

Row 5: Repeat row 4.

Continue to repeat rows 2 to 5 using a stitch marker on the brim side (if required) to keep track of your pattern repeat until you have reached your desired length. Finish with the repeat of rows 4 and 5. You want the fabric to fit comfortably around your head, but it should be a little bit snug as the fabric will relax and stretch out. Mine was 19″ (48.5cm) in length.

Turn your work (don’t do a ch1), and bring the two short sides of your panel together (the 12″ (30cm) sides). These will be your beginning row and last row.

Have the beginning row at the back. Slip stitch into the top post of the very first stitch of row 1. There will be 2 loops on your hook. Then slip stitch through 2 posts of the next stitch of your last row (the row facing you) and through 1 post of the next stitch of row 1 (the back row). There will be 4 loops on your hook.

Continue to slip stitch through the 2 posts from the front row and 1 post of the back row. Repeat this until you’ve joined the 2 sides together. You will now be at the crown of the hat (this is also the inside). Fasten off and leave a tail about 15″ (37cm) long. Darn in your beginning tail from row 1.

Baste the long tail through the top stitches of the hat. Gently gather the top of the hat closed.

Sew back and forth to close the crown completely, then tie and knot and darn in the end. If you want to add a pom-pom, you can check out this video, and just attach it at the top!

Gauge and Supplies

• Gauge: Band- 8 stitches = 1.75 inches (4.5cm) Body-8 stitches = 2 inches (5 cm)
• Pattern repeat = 8 stitches
• Finished size = Adult
• Hook: 4.5 mm (7) and 5 mm (H/8) to equal gauge
• Yarn: Medium 4 acrylic, 160 yards (156 meters)
• Yarn recommended for this project: Red Heart Unforgettable Polo#3956 x 0.6 ball
• Scissors
• Stitch markers
• Darning needle

Stitches Required:

• Slip Stitch: sl st
• Chain Stitch: ch
• Half Double Crochet: hdc
• Double Crochet: dc
• V-Stitch: v-st
• Front Post Double Crochet: fpdc (see special directions below)
• Front Post Half Double Crochet: fphdc (same as fpdc but with hdc)

Special Directions:

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yo, insert hook behind the post of the dc of the previous row, yo, pull loop behind dc post, and complete dc.

Always crochet under 2 posts of each stitch unless otherwise noted.

Directions:

Band (use 4.5mm hook)

Row 1: Ch9, 1sc in 1 leg of 2^nd ch from hook, 1sc in next 7 chs (total 8 sc), ch1, turn.

Row 2: 1sc in back leg of next 7 sts, 1sc in both legs of 8^th st, ch1, turn.

Rows 3 to 73: repeat row 2.

To join the band, bring short edges of rim together and sl st through front legs of 8 sts on each side to join. Turn seam to inside.

Hat pattern (use 5mm hook)

Row 1: starting at the top of your join, ch3, 1dc in end of first row of band, *1dc in end of next row of band. Rpt from * all around the band for a total of 72 dc (including first ch 3), sl st into beg ch 3 to join. Turn your work.

Row 2: Ch5 (counts as first dc, ch 2), 1dc in first st to create a v-stitch. *Skip 3 sts, 1dc in 4^th st, ch2, 1dc in same st. (v-st) Repeat from * 16 times or to 4 sts before end of row (total 18 v-sts), sl st into 3^rd ch beg ch 5 to join. Turn your work.

Row 3: Ch1, 7dc in ch 2 sp of first v-st (7 dc shell), ch1. *skip next v-st, 7dc in next v-st, ch1. Repeat from * 7 times (total 9 shells). Skip last full v-st, sl st into beg ch 1 to join. Turn your work.

Row 4: Ch3, *1fpdc in next 7 dc posts, 1dc in next ch 1 sp. Repeat from * to last 7 dc shell, sl st into beg ch 3 to join. Turn your work.

Row 5: Ch4 (counts as first dc, ch 1), sk st. *1dc in next st, ch1, sk st. Repeat from * to the end of row, sl st into 3^rd ch of beg ch 4 to join. Turn your work.

Row 6: Ch1, 1hdc in first ch 1 sp. *1fphdc in next dc post, 1hdc in next ch 1 sp. Repeat from * to the end of the row, sl st into beg ch 1. Turn your work.

Rows 7 to 12: Repeat rows 1 to 6

Row 13: Repeat row 1

Row 14: Repeat row 2

Row 15: Closing the crown: Ch3, *start 1dc in ch 2 sp of v-st, but pull through first 2 loops only (don’t complete the dc). Leave 2 loops on hook. Start 1dc in ch 2 sp of next v-st, but pull through first 2 loops only (don’t complete the dc). Yo and pull through remaining 3 loops. Repeat from * all around, sl st into beg ch 3 to join. Ch1 to fasten off and leave an 8-inch tail.

Using a darning needle, bring yarn from the front, under two legs of the first stitch. Repeat darning under 2 legs of each stitch all the way around. Pull yarn tight to close crown. Bring a darning needle through the top of the hat to the inside. Do a few stitches to secure the crown, darn in the end.

Darn in the other tail and you are done! Isn’t this so pretty!! You can steam or block the hat. The manufacturer’s instructions for washing this yarn says to machine wash and dry. I would not follow those recommendations. I would hand wash and lay flat to dry.
