Colorful Crocheted Rocks!

Sharing is caring!

Learn how to make these Colorful Crocheted Rocks! I am so excited to share this pattern with you because I simply love this technique. I love to collect rocks and I love to crochet, so for me, this is the best combination. The pattern is quite simple, however, I do suggest that you have a bit of crochet experience. While the stitches used are basic double crochets and half-double crochets, working with fine thread can be a bit awkward if you are new to crochet. But if you are feeling brave and don’t mind working through the awkwardness, then do give this a try!

As always, I recommend my Beginner Crochet Series to learn all the basics of crochet including all the stitches for this pattern, proper crochet tension, and how to darn in the tail ends. I used the cotton thread for the rock with the burgundy petals and blue netting, the other two rocks were done with embroidery thread. I got my threads from a thrift store, so I don’t have the brands or colors, but you can use either type of thread and any color combination you like! The nice thing about embroidery thread is that it comes in small skeins and there are countless colors to choose from to make your own colorful crocheted rocks.

I just want to say a little something about the photos in this blog. I have started grabbing clips from the video footage as I always forget to take the actual photographs of the project while filming. My memory fails me on a regular basis, so I have started this practice of simply taking the clips from the video. The quality isn’t as good as the camera, but it totally saves my brain!

At this point, the motif is the correct size for a 3″ (7.5 cm) rock. If you have chosen a rock with this diameter, but it is quite thick, or if you have a larger rock, you can repeat round five one more time. Once you have the correct size, fasten off and leave a long tail (about 7″ or 18 cm) for a gathering thread. The motif will have a cup shape and that is exactly what the desired effect is. Darn in your tail ends, except for the gathering tail.

Use the darning needle and tail end to weave in and out of the ch1 spaces of the last round.

Place the motif over the rock and pull the tail to gather the motif snuggly around the rock. Don’t pull too hard, just make it a nice snug fit. Make a couple of stitches at the beginning to secure the gathering and then tie a knot. Darn in the tail end.

Adjust the double crochet stitches in the chain seven spaces to make them evenly spaced out and you are done with your colorful crocheted rock! Again, I am grabbing clips from the video footage for the photos here, so please forgive the quality.
