Granny Square Christmas Stocking ~ With a Lining!

Sharing is caring!

Christmas is coming and what could be more fun than crocheting a Granny Square Christmas Stocking ~ With a Lining? Crocheted stockings are wonderful and there are many patterns and designs to choose from, but they are not necessarily practical. Crocheted fabric stretches, especially the chain stitch loop used to hang the stocking, and if you are using granny squares for your stocking design…there are all those holes to contend with!

So, in this tutorial, I will show you not only how to make a granny square stocking, but how to make a lining for it. You can use the lining concept for any crocheted Christmas stocking you like! Adding a lining to a crocheted stocking will give it more strength and make it more practical. Try putting an orange and a box of chocolates in a crocheted stocking and it will stretch out a lot! Also, making a fabric loop to hang the stocking with is much stronger than a crocheted loop.

There is no written pattern for this project, but I will include here links for resources needed to complete it. There is a video tutorial for this Granny Square Christmas Stocking ~ With a Lining at the bottom of this post. Have fun!

Granny Square Christmas Stocking ~ with a lining supplies

Supplies

  • 13 Granny Squares of your choice
    • This pattern uses my Small TOG Granny Square Pattern which is 5″ in diameter
    • The yarns I used in order of rounds one to four are all number 4 medium-weight yarns:
      • Craftsmart, Value – Off White
      • Bernat Premium – Evergreen
      • Loops and Threads, Impeccable – Claret
  • Crochet hook (size used for granny squares)
  • Daring needle
  • Scissors
  • Lining fabric – approximately 1/2 yard
  • Sewing supplies
    • Sewing machine and matching thread or sewing needle and thread.
  • Hand-steamer (optional)

I am no longer offering affiliate links, but you can find some of the supplies needed at Michael’s Canada, Yarn Canada, Yarnspirations, and Hobby Lobby. Of course, there is also Amazon, but I find the yarn prices have become astronomical… I don’t know why that is, but I’ve stopped recommending them.

The lining can be made either using a sewing machine or by hand-stitching and I have included a video tutorial on how to hand-stitch a lining for a purse. The principle is the same and can be used for making the lining for this stocking.

Above is the tutorial for my “Small TOG Granny Square”. I like to block my squares once they are all done as this makes them look nice and neat.

This tutorial on How to Sew a Lining for a Crocheted Bag will teach you everything you need to know to hand-sew the lining. Of course, you can use a sewing machine if you like.

This Granny Square Christmas Stocking ~ With Lining is so much fun to make and is practical too! I love the Small TOG Granny Square pattern because the first round looks like a star… the perfect design for a Christmas stocking.
