I love this project! Join me on a creative journey and learn how to sew a rope bowl or basket. I wanted to make a basket to store crochet projects in because I have been using wicker baskets, and the yarn gets snagged on the wicker ends (and that’s not good). The rope basket works so much better!

In this tutorial, you can make either a rope bowl by using just one 50 foot (15 meters) length of cord, or you can make a rope basket by using two lengths of cord for a total of 100 feet (30 meters). I will show you how to make handles for the basket and how to finish off the last bit of rope on either the bowl or basket.

The supplies you will need for this project are:
- 50 to 100 feet (15 meters) of 3/8″ (9 mm) cording
- thread
- straight pins
- scissors
- a sewing machine
- size 16 or denim needle
I used “The Cordage Source” polypropylene utility cord, but you could use any cord or rope you like. I wanted to use cotton rope, but I couldn’t find it anywhere in the 3/8″ size. You could also use 1/4″ cord or rope, and that would make a finer basket. I wasn’t able to find any 3/8″ cord or rope online, but you can check out your local hardware store to see what you can find. You don’t want to use sisal or manila rope because it would be too tough for the sewing machine to sew through.

So a funny thing happened with this project, and this is not the first time I’ve done this! I forgot to take photographs of each step of the tutorial! I usually do this with crochet tutorials and it’s pretty easy to unravel and redo all the steps I want to photograph. I got to the end of the first 50 foot piece of cording when I realized what I had done!
Now the good thing is that I was video recording the tutorial, so I have everything you need to know for this project in the video tutorial! If you like written directions, then I apologize for not having this available for you…but I do have some pretty pictures of the finished project!
