Learn how to crochet a dishcloth to give as gifts for a variety of occasions. These super easy dishcloths are made with cotton yarn and are perfect to use as a dishcloth, face cloth, or spa cloth. They really do make wonderful gifts because they work so well! You can wrap up some natural soap with one of these cloths or crochet a set of two or three cloths in different colors and wrap them up with a ribbon!

The finished size of this crocheted dishcloth pattern is 8.5″ by 8.5″ (21 cm by 21 cm). I used a 1.75 oz (50 gm) ball of Bernat Handicrafter yarn which was the perfect amount to make this size. There was a bit of yarn leftover, maybe enough to do one more pattern repeat, but I do like the finished size of this cloth. My hands are on the small size, so it is perfect for me.

You can use any number four medium weight yarn, but it does need to be cotton yarn. I used the Bernat yarn, which seems to be rather expensive on Amazon and not available through Yarnspirations. I got mine through Yarn Canada (who is also out of stock), but you can probably get it at your local craft or yarn store. You could also use Lilly Sugar’n Cream yarn.

I actually did a yarn review (well a yarn comparison) between Lilly Sugar’n Cream and Bernat Handicrafter yarn, and I put a link to that video below. The issue with the Lilly brand is that the size of the small ball is 2.5 oz (70 gm), so it’s more than you need for a dishcloth and not enough to make two! But… Lilly brand has a medium size ball, which is 4 oz, and would be enough to make two dishcloths.

This pattern is suited for beginners, but if you are new to crochet, I do recommend checking out my Beginner Crochet Series first. You do want to have a little bit of crochet experience for this, but the whole pattern is made using chain stitches and single crochets! The first row is the most difficult part of the pattern, but once you get past that…it is easy peasy!

I also suggest two different size crochet hooks for this project. I use a 4mm (G-6) hook for the foundation chain to make sure that the beginning chain is nice a loose. Cotton yarn does not have any give, so you want a bit of extra room there. The rest of the pattern is made with the 3.5 mm (E-4) hook.

How the pattern crochets up!

As I mentioned above, this pattern is made using just a chain stitch and a single crochet stitch. The way they are crocheted together creates this really pretty fan design, yet keeps a nice tight pattern that is perfect for a dishcloth. I have created a video tutorial that takes you through the whole pattern, step by step. You can watch it here, or watch it on YouTube. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and make lots of these pretty dishcloths for yourself and as gifts. There are countless color selections in the Bernat line as well, and if you plan to make lots, you may want to get the 14 oz (400 gm) ball, and it comes in all sorts of variegated tones.

I have also created a video where I compare Lilly Sugar’n Cream yarn with Bernat Handicrafter yarn. The yarns are quite similar, however, I do talk about some interesting differences. Check it out!
