I made this motif using one color of yarn, but you could use any combination of colors by fastening off after any round and adding a new color for the next round. I will have another tutorial showing how to make this motif into a market bag, and if you are interested in that project, I recommend using a cotton yarn because it is nice and strong. If you want to make a pillow, blanket or any other project with this large crocheted square motif, you can use any yarn you desire.

I did try to write a pattern for this project, but unfortunately, my cognition is still very much uncooperative, and I simply can’t write patterns at this time. So there is just the video at the bottom of this post. It is very comprehensive and shows you step-by-step how to crochet every round of this large crocheted square motif. The video tutorial is a bit long because each of the thirteen rounds is different. If you are new to crochet, make sure to check out my Beginner Crochet Series to learn all the basics of crochet.

The first seven rounds of the large crocheted square motif are crocheted in a circular pattern and then we begin to square the motif off starting at round eight. This is where the stitch markers are handy, but not required.

The finished motif will require blocking when you are done, and I have a video tutorial below that demonstrates how to do that. I like using the hand-steamer as it is very convenient, works quickly and does a very nice job.

I am using tan as a neutral color, but you could use any neutral you like such as cream, black or grey. You could also work without a neutral and just use up all your scrap yarn in a random design. If you are new to crochet, make sure to check out my Beginner Crochet Series.

When I create patterns, I make a lot of test pieces. As a result, I had quite a stash of partially made pieces and test swatches. It was a big ugly mess!

I sorted the mess out and kept any granny squares I had, reducing some of them to two rounds. I had quite a few with two rounds and some with just one round. I decided to use these in my design and created two panels for each end of the scarf, using nine squares of two rounds each. I unraveled all the other samples and used them for the center panel of the scarf, which I made using the half double crochet v-stitch. All the yarn is a number 4 medium-weight yarn.

I give these details in the video tutorial, including the hook sizes I use for the center panel which was a 5 mm (I-9) for the foundation chain and row one, then a 4 mm (H-6) for the v-stitch pattern.

The result was a very fun and funky ‘scrappy scarf’. In the video tutorial below for this project, I show you how I used a variety of elements to create this Crocheted Stash Buster Scarf along with a few extra tips. All the tutorials I refer to can be found in this blog post. I also have an entire playlist on my YouTube channel with several scarf patterns. You could use any of those tutorials for a stash buster scarf as well!

This is the tutorial on how to crochet a basic granny square. You can do two rounds, as I did, or make larger squares…it’s up to you! Be creative and playful!

I used the half double crochet v-stitch for the center section, but you could use any stitch pattern you like. I have another stitch pattern at the bottom of this blog for the straight granny square stitch that would be perfect with the granny squares!

You can join your scrap pieces of yarn together using the magic knot, which I show how to do in the video above, or you can join as you go which I demonstrate in the Crocheted Stash Buster Scarf tutorial.

I use the whip stitch to join the granny squares together and to sew the granny square panels to the center panel of the scarf, but you can use any joining technique you like.

If you want to add tassels to your scarf, check out the video above “Super Easy Crocheted Scarf for Beginners” and go to the 14:40 mark to see how tassels are done. This scarf pattern also uses the half-double crochet v-stitch pattern.

The above tutorial for the Granny Stitch in rows would be so perfect to use in this project. I love that crochet is so flexible. You can take the ideas I share here and make your own pattern for a scarf, using your stash of scrap yarn.

This project is suited for beginners as Granny Squares are one of the easiest crochet projects to begin with. If you are new to crochet, make sure to check out my Beginner Crochet Series to learn all the basics of crochet.

I used the medium size Granny Square Christmas Trees to create a garland to go with the Granny Square Christmas Stockings I made last year. I mixed up the colors a bit to make each tree slightly different.

The medium and large trees are made using a number 4 medium-weight yarn, and the smaller trees are made using a number 10 crochet cotton, and embroidery floss. See below for more details on the supplies.

To make the Gift Bag/Pillow, you simply continue to repeat round 4 of the Tog Granny Square pattern for as many rounds as you like. I did an additional seven rounds for a total of eleven rounds for this project. In the video tutorial, I show you how to add buttons at the back to create an opening to place your soft gift items in or the pillow form. I also show a slightly different way to create the trunk for the Large Granny Square Christmas Tree.

I made a matching beanie using a pattern I’ve already shared here on my blog and on YouTube, and the set turned out perfectly! I make hat and scarf sets to donate to a local high school. They have a program where they gather items to give to people in need, so I enjoy creating colorful and cheerful sets.

I do not have a written pattern for this stitch or the scarf project as I still struggle with my brain function and writing patterns is simply too difficult. I hope the video tutorial will be inspiring!

The self-striping yarn created such a wonderful pattern for the scarf and beanie. Crocheting with the Granny Square Straight Row Stitch was great fun to watch how the colors would unfold and how the whole piece would look. There is no way to plan or know how it will look until the project is all done!

The same goes for the beanie, and what happened for me was that the top of the beanie started with the blues and teals, but by the bottom, there were only red tones left. The brim didn’t look very good in those colors, so I cut the remaining red yarn off and choose a complimentary teal tone out of my stash. I used that color for the brim and it made the beanie pop!

This project would be great for using up scrap yarn as well. Each row could be a different color and the beanie could be a mix of the colors you choose. You could also tie scrap yarn together using the magic knot and let the combination surprise you! See all the video’s below…have fun and be playful!

In the video tutorial, I show how I came across a manufacturer’s knot in the ball of yarn. I always tug on those knots, and this one came apart! If this happens to you, the Magic Knot is a great way to tie the ends back together again.

So, in this tutorial, I will show you not only how to make a granny square stocking, but how to make a lining for it. You can use the lining concept for any crocheted Christmas stocking you like! Adding a lining to a crocheted stocking will give it more strength and make it more practical. Try putting an orange and a box of chocolates in a crocheted stocking and it will stretch out a lot! Also, making a fabric loop to hang the stocking with is much stronger than a crocheted loop.

There is no written pattern for this project, but I will include here links for resources needed to complete it. There is a video tutorial for this Granny Square Christmas Stocking ~ With a Lining at the bottom of this post. Have fun!

• 13 Granny Squares of your choice
  • This pattern uses my Small TOG Granny Square Pattern which is 5″ in diameter

The colors for this pattern were inspired by this beautiful plant I came across while on an alpine walk with my husband. With autumn in the air, this usually bright green plant is changing into the beautiful fall colors of gold, tan, copper, and burgundy. Nature sure knows how to get color combinations right!

I am using five different colors, one for each round, but of course, you can use any color combination you like! This square is 6″ by 6″, whereas the small granny square with four rounds finished at 5″ by 5″. I’m using a 4mm (G-6) crochet hook for the Large “TOG” Granny square because, for some reason, my crochet tension has become super relaxed…it must be all that meditation I’m doing!

Supply List

• Number 4 medium weight (worsted weight) yarn of your choice. I am using:
  • Bernat Premium yarn in Burgundy, Spring Green, Golden Wheat, Chili, and Caramel

Special Stitch dc3tog: yo, place hook through st, yo, bring yarn through (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, place hook through same st, yo, bring yarn through (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops, (3 loops on hook), yo, place hook through same st, yo, bring yarn through (5 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops, (4 loops on hook), yo pull through all 4 loops.

The only difference between the large “TOG” Granny Square and the small “TOG” Granny Square, is the addition of round three, a round of dc3togs, with a chain 3 in between. Otherwise, the four rounds from the small square are the same.

The above image shows round one complete, using the Caramel color. Just follow the pattern written below!

Round one: Ch 5, sl st into the first ch to create a ring. Ch 2, dc2tog in the ring, ch 2, (beg tog made), dc3tog, ch 2 into the ring 5 times (6 dc3togs incl beg tog). Join with a sl st into 3rd st of beg tog, fasten off.

The image above shows round two complete, in the burgundy color.

Round two: Join a new color with a sl st into any ch2 sp. Ch 2, hdc into same ch2 sp, ch 2 (beg tog made), dc2tog, ch 2, *[dc2tog, ch 2, dc2tog, ch 2] in next ch2 sp, repeat from * 4 times (12 dc2togs incl beg tog). Join with a sl st into 3rd st of beg tog, fasten off.

Round three: join with a new color (I’m using Golden Wheat) into any ch2 sp, ch 2, dc2tog in the same ch2 sp, ch 3, (beg tog made), dc3tog, ch 3 into the next ch2 sp 11 times (12 dc3togs incl beg tog). Join with a sl st into 3rd st of beg tog, fasten off.

I should mention here, that while I’ve created this third round using a dc3tog stitch (with a chain 3 in between), you could actually use any cluster stitch you like. Feel free to be playful and try some different stitches…you can always unravel and try again!

I did round four using the Spring Green. You will notice the square curling a bit at this point, but don’t worry, the final round will make the granny square flat.

Round four: Join a new color with a sl st into any ch3 sp. Ch 2, dc2tog, ch 3 into the same ch3 sp (beg tog made), dc3tog, ch1 in the same ch3 sp (corner made), *3 hdc, ch 1 in next ch3 sp, twice, [dc3tog, ch 3, dc3tog, ch 1] in next ch3 sp. Repeat from * 2 times. 3 hdc, ch 1 in next ch3 sp, twice. Join with a sl st into 3rd st of beg tog, fasten off.

I used the Chai color for round five as shown in the image above.

Round five: Join a new color with a sl st into any ch3 sp. [Ch 2, 1 dc, ch 3, 3dc, ch 1] in same ch3 sp, *3dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp 3 times, [3dc, ch 3, 3dc, ch 1] in next ch 3 sp. Repeat from * 2 times, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp 3 times, 1 dc in beg ch 3 sp (to complete beg 3dc cluster). Do not fasten off as usual.

Note: This is a special way to finish the last round of your granny square, omitting a knot and giving it a perfect finish.

To do the invisible finish, cut the tail, pull it through the loops on the square, and attach a darning needle. Bring the needle under the two “v” stitches of the third stitch of the beg cluster (top of the dc). Bring the needle back down between the two “v” stitches that the yarn is coming out of, make a “mock stitch” and darn in the tail end. See the video tutorial at 22:22 for detailed directions.

You can block the squares if you like (I prefer using a hand-steamer) and I hope you enjoy this large “TOG” Granny Square. Have fun making whatever your heart desires with this design. The Pattern

Ch 4, sl st to make a ring

Round one-Aran: ch 1, 1 sc, ch 4 into the ring 8 times, sl st to beg ch 1 to join, fasten off.

Round two-Candy Pink: join with sl st into any ch4 sp, *ch 2, 1 dc, 1 trc, 1 dc in same ch4 sp, ch 2, sl st ch2 into same ch4 sp, ch 2, sl st into next ch4 sp. Repeat from * 7 times, joining the last ch2 st into the beg ch st, fasten off.

Round three-Spring Green: join with a sc in any ch2 sp, ch 4 (behind the petal), *sc, ch 4 in next ch2 sp, 7 times, join with a sl st into beg sc.

Round four: Spring Green: sl st into next ch4 sp, [ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in same ch4 sp (first corner made), *3 dc, ch 1 in next ch4 sp, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in next ch4 sp. Repeat from * 2 times, 3 dc, ch 1 in last ch4 sp, join with a sl st into the 3rd st of beg cluster, fasten off.

With the last dc, cut a tail and remove it from the hook. Thread the yarn on a darning needle and bring the needle through the back of the 3rd stitch (the top of the dc after the ch2), of the beginning cluster. Bring the needle back down between the ‘v’ stitch of the stitch that the yarn is coming out of. Make a ‘mock’ stitch, and darn in the tail end. See the video for details.

I do offer a few unique tips in this pattern that help to create a perfect finish for this blanket. If you are new to crochet, then you can check out my Beginner Crochet Series, which shows you everything you need to know to make this project. You will learn how to hold proper tension, all the basic stitches, and how to darn in your tail ends. This granny square blanket is a new and improved version of the very first Granny Square Blanket Pattern I created. In the first pattern, I am using a self-striping yarn, and you can certainly use a similar type of yarn in this project as well. Rather than changing colors for every round and every other round, you’d just carry on using the same yarn.

I am using the Bernat Premium yarn for this project, but you can use any number four medium-weight yarn you like. You can use this color palette, or create your own. I did a total of twenty-eight rounds which made the blanket 33″ x 33″ (84 cm x 84 cm), but you can make it any size you like. Another choice you have is to finish the last two rounds of the blanket with a different colored yarn, or perhaps use the neutral cream color. I made this blanket in the spring (which has been very cold and wet here in the Pacific Northwest), so the color pallet I chose was probably an unconscious desire for spring to finally arrive!

Helpful Information

Finished size = 33″ x 33″ (84 cm x 84 cm) with a total of 28 rounds

Total amount of yarn used (approximately) = 860 yards (790 meters)

Round one: Aran-ch 5, sl st into beg ch to create a ring, ch 2 (counts as beg dc), 2 dc into ring, ch 2. *3 dc, ch 2 into the ring, repeat from * two more times. Skip the beg ch2 and join with a sl st into the top of the next dc. This is tip number one! By joining into the top of the dc, rather than the beg ch2, the beginning cluster looks more like all the other clusters.

Turn your work. This is tip number two! For the entire pattern, you will turn your work for each round. This is a wonderful technique to help prevent the blanket from becoming twisted and wonky. A common problem with blankets that are worked in the round (going in the same direction), is that the tension of the stitches can pull the whole project in one direction. This can be an issue for people who are still mastering their crochet tension. By turning your work with each round, the tension is balanced and this technique also creates a nice texture to the blanket.

If you are proficient with your tension and don’t want to turn your work with each round, then you can certainly just continue crocheting in the same direction, but I actually really like how this technique looks.

Round two: (after turning your work), sl st into ch2 sp. Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), [ 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in ch2 sp, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in next ch2 sp. Repeat from * two more times. Skip the beg ch2 and join with a sl st into the top of the next dc, fasten off. Turn your work.

NOTE: If you want to use just one color of yarn or want to use a variegated or self-striping yarn, do not fasten off here. Simply turn your work and continue to work the pattern in continuous rounds. Each new round will start with a beginning 3 dc cluster along the straight edge.

Round three: Magenta-Join into any ch2 sp with a sl st, ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in same ch2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1], in next ch2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp. Repeat from * two more times. Skip the beg ch2 and join with a sl st into the top of the next dc, turn your work.

Round four: Sl st into ch1 sp. Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), 2 dc, ch 1 in same ch1 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in next ch2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, twice. Repeat from * two more times, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in next ch2 sp. Skip the beg ch2 and join with a sl st into the top of the next dc, fasten off. Turn your work.

Round five: Aran-Join into any ch2 sp with a sl st, ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] in same ch2 sp, *3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, 3 times, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1], in next ch2 sp. Repeat from * two more times, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, 3 times. Skip the beg ch2 and join with a sl st into the top of the next dc, fasten off and turn your work.

Rounds six and seven: Spring Green-repeat rounds three and four, and increase the sets of 3 dc on the straight edge for each round.

Round eight: Aran-repeat round five, and increase the sets of 3 dc, on the straight edges for each round.

NOTE: Each time you join a new color, join into a ch2 sp. This makes it easier to darn in your tail ends by having two dc clusters to sew into (for the most part). This is tip number three!

Continue to repeat rounds three and four with the Gold and Sky Blue, and repeat round five, using Aran, between the colored rounds. Again, you can continue to repeat the color sequence for as many rounds as you like.

For my blanket, I repeated the color sequence twice and then did one more round with the Aran color and one with the Magenta. The last round is simply done with double crochets. Whichever color you choose to have as your final round, use that color for the last two rounds…the granny square stitch round and the border round.

For the final round, join as before…sk beg ch2, sl st into the next dc, but don’t turn your work. Ch 2, 1 dc in the next st, 5 dc in the next ch2 sp, 1 dc in each st to the next corner. Repeat all the way around. You can fasten off with a slip stitch and darn in all your tail ends, or you can finish with an invisible stitch as shown below. This is tip number four!

Cut a tail, take the yarn off your hook, and thread on a darning needle. Sk beg ch2 and bring the needle in from the back of the next dc, going under two loops. Bring the needle back in between the ‘v’ stitch of the stitch the yarn comes out of. Adjust the yarn to look like a stitch. Darn in your tail ends and your Easy Granny Square Blanket for Beginners is done!

While this pattern is beginner-friendly, I always recommend my Beginner Crochet Series to learn all the basics of crochet if you are new to this hobby. Also, I have a video tutorial for this Crocheted Old Time Square Motif at the bottom of this post which is perfect to help the novice crocheter, or for anyone who (like me) has a hard time reading crochet patterns.

The yarn I am using for this crochet project is a thrift store find, so I don’t have any information on the fiber or official weight of yarn. My guess is that it is some sort of rayon/cotton blend, and I am quite certain this is a number three light-weight yarn. I have recommended a couple of options in the supply list below that will be of equivalent properties.

I have made a lovely scarf using this motif and you can find the tutorial here.

Supply List

• Number 3 light-weight yarn ~ 18 yards (16.5 m) per square (roughly based on yarn choice and personal tension)

Crocheted Old Time Square Motif Pattern

Round one: ch 8, join with a sl st to beg ch1, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), *1 dc in ring, repeat from * 14 times (16 dc incl beg ch3). Join with a sl st into the back loop and back bump of 3rd ch of beg ch3.

Round two: ch 5 (counts as 1dc, ch2), *1 dc, ch 2 in back loop and back bump of next st, repeat from * 14 times (16 dc, ch2). Join with a sl st into the 3rd ch of beg ch5.

Round three: sl st into the next ch2 sp, ch 2, [yo, place hook through sp, yo, draw up a loop, yo draw through 2 loops], 2 times in the same sp, yo draw through all 3 loops on hook (beg 3dc cl made), ch 3, *1 3dc cl, ch 3 in next ch2 sp, repeat from * 14 times (16 3dc cl’s made). Join with a sl st into st closest to ch3 sp.

UPDATE: as I was creating the Crocheted Old-Time Lace Scarf pattern, I found some of the chain 8 spaces in each corner to be a bit bulky. This was because my crochet tension was too loose in some of the corners. In retrospect, I think a chain 7 would work better. For this round, you can do either a chain 7 or 8 in the corner, depending on your tension.

Round four: sl st into next ch3 sp, ch 2, [yo, place hook through sp, yo, draw up a loop, yo draw through 2 loops], 2 times in the same sp, yo draw through all 3 loops on hook (beg 3dc cl made), ch 8 (or 7), 1 3dc cl in same ch3 sp, ch 4. *1 sc, ch 4 in next ch3 sp, 3 times, [1 3dc cl, ch 8 (or 7), 1 3dc cl, ch 4] in next ch 3 sp, repeat from * twice, 1 sc, ch 4 in next ch3 sp 3 times, join with a sl st into the top of beg cluster, fasten off and darn in your tail ends.

Once your square is complete, I do recommend blocking the motif. You can use a foam board or folded towel with pins to shape the square. You can mist the motif with water and let it dry or use a hand steamer to moisten the motif and let it dry.

This Crocheted Old Time Square can be used to make a number of projects. It would be beautiful as a shawl or sweater. The scarf is actually a tutorial I published a couple of years ago, but, unfortunately, there was a copyright claim on the granny square pattern I used for the tutorial. I did make up this design on my own, but someone else had created it too…and had a copyright on it. So I had to take both the tutorial for the square and the scarf down. But I figured the scarf was such a lovely design and it seemed a shame to not use the tutorial, so I redesigned the granny square!

You can see in the image above, the original granny square design in the scarf. The two granny squares at the bottom of that image are my new design, the Color Wheel Granny Square. I’ve used two of the same color schemes so you can see the difference. I love these colors so much and I think they look so cheerful.

Pattern

Round one: ch 4, join with a sl st in the first ch to create a ring. Ch 4 (counts as first dc plus ch1 sp), *1 dc, ch 1 in the center ring, rpt from * 10 times for a total of 12dc, ch1 (including beg ch4). Join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch4, fasten off.

Round two: join a new color in any ch1 sp with a sl st. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in same ch1 sp, ch 1. *2 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, rpt from * 10 times for a total of 12 clusters. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off.

Round three: join a new color in any ch1 sp with a sc, ch 2. *1 sc, ch 2 in next ch1 sp, rpt from * 10 times to complete round. Join with a sl st in beg sc, fasten off.

Round four: join a new color with a sl st in any ch2 sp, ch 3 (counts as beg dc), 2 dc, ch 1 in same ch2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch2 sp, 3 dc, ch 2 in next ch2 sp (this creates space for the corner of the next round). *3 dc, ch 1 in next two ch2 sps, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch 2 sp. Round five: join a new color in a ch2 space with a sl st. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1 in same ch2 sp (corner made). 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, twice. *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, twice. Repeat from * two more times, join with a sl st in the 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off.

If you are using this granny square pattern for another project, you may want to finish the last round with the “Invisible Finish”. This is a lovely technique that eliminates the knot in the final round, which makes it easier to join granny square motifs together. I have a short video tutorial that shows how to do this finish!

I think I might be becoming obsessed with crocheting round motifs because once you have the sense of how to increase each round, the possibilities become endless! I always like to offer simple crochet patterns and this one couldn’t be easier. I also give you some tips on how to make this mandala even larger if you like. If you are new to crochet, you can check out my Beginner Crochet Series to learn all the basics.

This project is perfect to use up scrap yarn, so grab your stash of yarn, a crochet hook that is suitable for the yarn you’ve chosen, some scissors, and a darning needle! I am using number 4 medium-weight acrylic yarn with a 6mm or G-6 crochet hook. This mandala measures 13″ (33 cm) in diameter based on this yarn and my crochet tension. There are 10 rounds in total.

For this pattern, the motif will be turned for each round so that you will be working into ‘the back’ of your work for each new round. This accomplishes three things.

First, when crocheting in consecutive and multiple rounds, sometimes the fabric can become warped because the tension is always pulling in one direction. Flipping the motif for each round prevents this from happening. Secondly, it creates a nice ridge between each round, and thirdly, it makes it easy to crochet the motif using just one color.

To begin: ch 5, join with a sl st into first ch to create a ring.

Round one: ch 4 (counts as beg ch 3, plus ch1), *1 dc, ch 1 into the ring. Repeat from * 10 times, join with sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off.

NOTE: If you want to make this mandala in just one color, then at the end of each round, you would turn your work, ch 3 (counts as the first dc), and follow the pattern as written.

Round two: turn your work, join on a new color with a sl st (or any joining method you prefer) in any ch1 sp. Ch 3 (counts as first dc and will do so for the entire pattern), 1 dc, ch 1 in same ch1 sp. *2 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp. Repeat from * 10 times, join with sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off.

Round three: turn your work, join on a new color in any ch1 sp. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1 in same ch1 sp. *3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp. Repeat from * 10 times, join with sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off.

Round four: turn your work, join with a new color in any ch1 sp. Ch 3, 2dc, ch 2 in the same ch1 sp, 4 dc, ch 2 in next ch2 sp, *3 dc, ch 2 in next ch2 sp, 4 dc, ch 2 in next ch2 sp. Repeat from * 4 times, join with sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off.

Round five: turn your work, join with a new color in any ch2 sp. Ch 3, 3 dc, ch 2 in the same ch2 sp. *4 dc, ch 2 in next ch2 sp. Repeat from * 10 times, join with sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off.

Round six: turn your work, join with a new color in any ch2 sp. Ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1 in same ch2 sp, 5 dc, ch 1 in next ch2 sp. *4 dc, ch 1 in next ch2 sp, 5 dc, ch 1 in next ch2 sp. Repeat from * 4 times, join with sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch3, fasten off. (This round will curl up slightly, but that is ok.)

Round seven: turn your work (in the video tutorial and picture above, I joined my new color in the ch1 sp before a cluster of 4dc, but I should have joined on before a cluster of 5 dc…oops, just follow the directions below). If you are working with just one color, then when you turn your work, the first cluster will be the 5dc cluster.

So…join with a new color in any ch1 sp before a 5dc cluster! Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1 in same ch1 sp, sk 2 sts, 3dc, ch1 in next st (top of middle dc of 5dc cluster), 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, sk 2 sts, 3 dc, ch 1 in between 2nd and 3rd st of 4dc cluster. *3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, sk 2 sts, 3dc, ch1 in next st (top of middle dc of 5dc cluster), 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, sk 2 sts, 3 dc, ch 1 in between 2nd and 3rd st of 4dc cluster. Repeat from * 4 times, join with a sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch 3, fasten off.

Round eight: turn your work, join with a new color in any ch1 sp. Ch 3, 2dc, ch 1 in same ch1 sp, 4 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp. *3 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp, 4 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp. Repeat from * 10 times, join with a sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch 3, fasten off.

At this point, you can finish the motif with a round of sc, hdc, or dc, it’s totally up to you, but I have two more finishing rounds if you like. Alternatively, you could repeat rounds 4 through 8 in various combinations to create a larger mandala.

As the motif becomes larger, the number of ‘increasing stitches’ required for each round will become less, and in some rounds, an increase may not be required. The way to tell is if the round begins to curl, then the next round needs to be increased.

For example, you may be able to repeat round seven twice before having to increase to the round eight repeat. Feel free to be playful and create a larger pattern yourself! The worst that can happen is that you have to unravel a round and try again (that is how I figure these patterns out). You can usually tell within the first quarter or third of the round if it is working out.

Round nine: Turn your work, join with a new color in any ch1 sp. Ch 3, 1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1 in same ch1 sp. *2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1 in next ch1 sp. Repeat from * 22 times. Fasten off with an invisible stitch (see video below).

For the final round, decide which side you want to be the front side. This pattern is reversible, but there may be one side that you think looks better.

Round 10: Join with a new color into the top loop of any stitch, ch 3. 1 dc in the top loop of each stitch all the way around. Fasten off with an invisible stitch.

Once you have completed your round granny square, you can block it with a hand steamer, or using the traditional method. Next time, I will be doing a tutorial on how to make these round granny squares into a pillow, including how to make the inner pillow form!

In the tutorial for the round crocheted pincushion, I used the granny motifs below and adapted them for the round shape. In this tutorial for the square pincushion, I am using the same motifs and also adapting them to suit a pincushion. I used both the Denim Rose Granny Square and the Wild Rose Granny Square, but I have the Tea Rose Granny Square pattern that would be great to use as well. The supplies you will need for this project are:

• Two square crocheted motifs of your choice:
  • Denim Rose Granny Square
  • Wild Rose Granny Square
  • Tea Rose Granny Square
• Matching yarn of equal weight (I used the Bernat Satin yarn in a few different colors)
• Crochet hook to correspond with the yarn of choice
• Darning needle
• Fabric scissors
• Scrap fabric for the pillow (cotton quilting fabric is nice)
• Stuffing for the pillow (use anything you like include fabric and yarn scraps)
• Straight pins
• Sewing needle and thread (or sewing machine)
• Pencil or pen

The square motifs need to be adapted in order to work as a pincushion, and I show how to do that in the video tutorial below. The main thing is to eliminate any spaces in the corners of a square motif. The chain spaces can create a gap for the inner pillow to poke out from, and that doesn’t look very good. This adaption could be used for any square motif.

In this tutorial, I use a sewing machine to make the inner pillow, but I do show how to hand sew a pillow in the tutorial for the round pincushion, so if you want to hand sew the pillow you can check out that tutorial here. Otherwise, you will find everything you need to know on how to make a square pincushion in the video below!

This project is suited for beginners, however, some basic crochet knowledge is recommended. For that, I have my Beginner Crochet Series that teaches you everything from a slip knot, chain stitch, basic stitches, proper crochet tension, and more. You can find that information here. For this tutorial, I used two round motifs from granny square tutorials I have on my YouTube channel. I used a number 4 medium weight yarn and a 4mm or G-6 crochet hook. You can use any round motif you like, but you will want to make sure your final round of both motifs has the same number of stitches. I talk about this in the video tutorial.

The motifs I used were the round section of the Denim Rose Granny Square (bottom left) and the Wild Rose Granny Square (bottom right). The center motif of the Tea Rose Granny Square (top) would look great as well. You can use two of the same motif, or you can mix them up and use two different motifs as I am doing in this tutorial.

The image below shows the granny square my FB friend was inquiring about. She found it in a thrift store bin and thought it was quite pretty. I love these FB groups because people share ideas, ask questions, and provide a lot of support for one another.

You may notice that in my version of the design, I only went to round four. After that round, the pattern repeats itself in the same way. In the photo above, rounds five and six are done in white. You could carry on with this pattern using any combination of colors you like!

I also created this granny square using a ‘tight’ style of crocheting. It looks as though the sample photo may have a ‘chain one stitch’ between each cluster of ‘three double crochets’ in rounds three to six. I didn’t add the ‘chain one’ in between, because I crochet quite loose, and in my prototype, the granny square was too loosie-goosie.
